Science Fiction
I’ve written previously about my “internal jukebox”, and usually speaking, these songs / tunes that play in my head only do so for a few hours at most.
So, what is it about the latest song that has allowed it to embed itself in my mind for about five days now, to the exclusion of all other music?
What is the song?
Well, it’s called Science Fiction/Double Feature, and it’s the intro track from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
What I’m not sure of is why has this song been in my head all this time.
After all, I’ve only seen the stage show once, probably over ten years ago, and I’ve seen the movie a couple of times too, also around ten years ago.
As an aside, at the time I saw the stage show, I’d heard of Rocky Horror, but had no idea what it was about.
So when my colleagues asked questions like “will you be wearing suspenders?”, I wondered what the hell they were talking about.
When I got to the theatre, however, and saw all of the fans dressed up in weird costumes, I sort of got what was going on.
But once the show started, and there were all of the audience participation bits, then it began to feel like I’d gate-crashed somebody else’s orgy.
I have to say that I much prefer the movie to the stage show, but I can’t deny the huge following that the show has.
Anyway, back to why this song is stuck in my head.
So, I’ve not seen anything to do with Rocky Horror for years and years, but there must be some subconscious trigger that set this song playing.
I simply can’t work out what it is, though.
It’s possible that it’s the striking image that accompanies this song that makes it so memorable, although this doesn’t explain why it suddenly started playing after all these years.
And here’s something I didn’t know about this song until recently: it’s actually sung by Richard O’Brien himself (i.e. the creator of Rocky Horror), although the lips belong to Patricia Quinn, who plays the role of Magenta.
And I’ve also tried replacing it with other songs (e.g. Katt Williams’ American Hustle), but for some reason, Science Fiction/Double Feature keeps on coming through.
Normally, I find it very difficult to think of one song while another’s playing, but in this case, it’s there like a cold that won’t go away.
The only good thing about all this is that I actually like the song, because usually, it’s those really irritating jingles from TV adverts that get stuck in my head.
But if it carries on playing on my internal jukebox for much longer, I may become sick and tired of this one.
