Morning Wood – An Observation

Men (and probably women) have long pondered why it is that many men often wake up with an erection.

Now, I’m not saying that I have the answer to this problem (actually, “problem” is probably not the right word – a problem erection would be, for example, when you’re standing in a tightly-packed Tube carriage, or lying on a massage table), but after having encountered this condition for most of my adult life, I did notice something a short while ago.

As I think I’ve mentioned previously, I don’t get much sleep, for reasons beyond my control – I rarely get more than two to four hours at a time, and 99% of the time, I’m woken abruptly, rather than being allowed to wake up and come to naturally, in my own good time.

On most of these occasions, I am in the middle of a dream when I’m woken (although I forget the details almost immediately).

And what I noticed is that when I’m woken in this manner, I almost never have an erection.

The only time during the past few months that I can recall waking with one is when I’ve come to naturally.

So, what does this tell me?

Well, if men think about sex as often as some people claim (which has always seemed way too frequent to be believable to me, but maybe I’m not your average man), then it would seem reasonable that men’s dreams might involve a lot of sex, with the consequent result that you get erections during those dreams.

But this clearly isn’t the case here.

Do men get random erections during their sleep?

I obviously can’t answer this, since if I’m sleeping, I don’t know whether I have one or not.

What does seem to be true is that I only get them moments before waking up, provided that I’m not woken abruptly by exterior factors (e.g. phone ringing, dogs barking, doorbell).

Does it mean that it depends on where you are in your sleep cycle? After all, when I’m woken abruptly, I’m typically in the middle of a sleep cycle, whereas when, on the rare occasions, I wake up naturally, I’m presumably at the end of a sleep cycle.

But even if this is the case, why does this make a difference?

My only theory is that, when the body realises it’s time to wake up, it sends a surge of blood around the entire system, full of “fresh nutrients’, to give you a wake-up call so that you’ll be ready to spring into action. And that rush of blood has obvious effects on the male anatomy.

Good observation there my friend. I haven’t really thought of it. All I know is its normal. Although I don’t let my kids see me on this scenario.

I also don’t know if by any chance dreaming can cause erections. You will only know this when someone is observing you. That I don’t want to happen.

This post made me laugh. But seriously, this is a big question that is taunting me. Maybe you have answered it already still doctors or scientists don’t say why and how.

Maybe your body needs to be asleep for the whole 8 hours to experience this. I never observed it and wouldn’t need to. As long as I am not causing harm to anyone but you also got a good point too.
