In the distant past, when I was at school, I have to confess that geography was one of the subjects in which I had little interest, as well as not being very good. (History and science were among the other subjects I found boring and or pointless.)

However, since leaving school, I did a bit of travelling, mainly on holiday, and became much better read, and my knowledge of the world improved dramatically.

As part of my interest in mnemonics, I even learned the capital cities of every country in the world (well, almost), as well as the capitals of each US state, amongst other arguably useless facts.

So I was delighted, today, to come across a very well put together geography test where you have to pinpoint on a world map a random set of cities and famous places.

You score points for how accurate you are, and how quickly you answer.

It’s both fun and educational – a credo I was brought up with as a young child – and I highly recommend you give it a try.

But be warned – it’s addictive! The temptation to have “just one more try” is simply too great!

Anyway, here’s the link:

BTW, I scored 392,636 on my first try.

You can also compete against others if you play it using FaceBook, so if you fancy seeing how your world knowledge compares to others, then go here instead:

Have fun!
