Why Is It That Farting …

Posted by The Random Blogger on Apr 11, 2011 in Why Is It?

… is (usually) so satisfying?

I suspect that this mainly applies to men, but not exclusively so – a young lady who was interviewed on the Carlos Mencia show specifically said that she wished she could fart in public.

Is it the noise it makes?

Is it the vibration it creates?

Is it (for some people) the smell?

Is it the feeling of warmth that often accompanies them (but not the searing heat of the Vindaloo after-burner, which is a different thing all together)?

I realise this is a gross subject for many people, but it is, after all, a natural bodily function, and no matter how careful you are with your diet (e.g. you don’t eat beans or cabbage), you can still have the occasional attack of flatulence.

Clearly, if you’re in the middle of eating dinner, then a smelly fart is at best off-putting, and at worst stomach-churning.

But there are those farts that are mainly just noise, with little after-shock, as it were.

Why are those deemed impolite?

If you have a theory about why farting is so satisfying, then please post a comment below.

Why Is It That Religious People…

… never seem to be happy when their friends and family die?

After all, shouldn’t they be rejoicing that they are getting the chance to go to heaven, which is where I thought they all aspired to go?

And if somebody dies young, isn’t that a way to get there even earlier?

Which is probably why suicide is forbidden, because presumably it’s an attempt at cutting in line and trying to get to heaven before your time?

Strange!

Why Is It That Ghosts …

Posted by The Random Blogger on May 5, 2010 in Why Is It?

… on TV and in movies can walk through walls but don’t sink down into the pavement?

If you remember the movie Ghost, with Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg, then shortly after Patrick Swayze dies and becomes a ghost, he finds this weird guy on the subway who can apparently move real objects, which he is so far unable to do.

He bugs this other ghost constantly to teach him how to do this himself, and eventually he acquires the knack himself.

But here’s my question: hasn’t Patrick already mastered the art of interacting with physical objects, otherwise how can he walk on the pavement (that’s sidewalk for my American readers), without falling through the surface?

Still, why should I let this minor detail ruin an otherwise pretty good movie?

Why Is It That Imaginary Friends …

Posted by The Random Blogger on Jan 30, 2010 in Why Is It?

… are OK for adults but not for children?

Many children may grow up without friends for any number of reasons, and in most cases, having an imaginary friend to share their days with probably causes no lasting harm. It’s a habit most children grow out of, once the need disappears.

And yet their parents will often see this as a bad thing, and try to stifle their children’s imagination and creativity.

But what about the socially-acceptable imaginary friend that a huge percentage of the world’s population talks to?

I am, of course, talking about Read more…
