Why Is The God Of The Old Testament…

Posted by The Random Blogger on Sep 13, 2011 in Religious Questions

… vengeful and murderous, when the God of the New Testament is all about love and forgiveness?

You have to admit, that’s a pretty huge about-face in terms of character.

And if this God can apparently change so dramatically, at what point did he (or she or it) stop being fallible and become infallible?  Surely an omnipotent, omniscient entity would have known from the word go that murder and revenge were not right, so why did it take him all those centuries to realise it?

Does that mean God is actually schizophrenic, and that he could turn back to his old self at any moment?

If the Bible as a whole is meant to represent any type of truth at all, how come so many people described such diametrically-opposed qualities in this super-being?

And while we’re at it, who did God go to for Confession when he decided to turn over a new leaf and be nice guy instead?

So many questions, and so few satisfactory answers!  If you have any (either more questions or good answers), please feel free to leave a comment below.

Who Did Cain Marry?

Posted by The Random Blogger on Apr 6, 2011 in Religious Questions

If God created Adam and Eve, and they only had two sons, Cain and Abel, then who did Cain marry to continue the human race?

This raise a couple of interesting possibilities.

For example, if Adam and Eve also had a daughter, then the entire human race would be the result of an incestuous interbreeding that is, of course, both dangerous, from a genetic perspective, and illegal (these days). (In fact, this is true anyway, if we’re all supposed to be descended from Adam and Eve.)

Otherwise, where did Cain’s wife come from? Does that mean that God didn’t create all of mankind?

Either way, there’s something amiss here.

And, yes, I realise this question must have been asked and debated thousands of times already, but then you have to wonder, why are so many people asking it?

The Vegetarian Ark

Posted by The Random Blogger on Apr 26, 2010 in Religious Questions

This is the first post in a category entitled Religious Questions, in which I ponder issues relating to religion that have bugged me for years.

To get started, we’ll go all the way back to the book of Genesis.

So, here’s my first question: if Noah (and family) took two of every animal with them on board the Ark, what (or who) did the carnivores eat?

There are, I guess, a few possibilities.

Firstly, maybe there were no carnivores in those days, but if that’s the case, where did they come from, and/or what made some of the surviving herbivores turn into meat-eaters (i.e. vegetarianism in reverse)?

Secondly, maybe Noah took extra animals on board just to feed those carnivores, and if so, how could he possibly gauge how much food would be needed to last until the Flood was over?

(In fact, he apparently didn’t know how long the Flood would last, anyway, so how did he know how much of any type of food to take on board to make sure nobody would starve to death during the voyage? He may have been told that the rain would last for 40 days and nights, but how could he have known it would take 150 days for the waters to subside again? And what type of food, in those days, would last for 150 days without spoiling?)

Thirdly, maybe this is why some species became extinct right from the get-go – because the carnivores on board ate them?

I’m sure there are other possibilities, so if you have any thoughts on the matter, please feel free to post a comment below.
