Watchers By Dean Koontz – A Review

Posted by The Random Blogger on Jul 12, 2011 in Book Reviews

Watchers by Dean KoontzSeveral years ago now, we watched a few movies that were apparently based on a Dean Koontz novel called “Watchers“.

The movies were so-so, but when I looked on IMDb (our standard source for all information relating to movies and TV shows), we found a lot of people saying that these various movies really didn’t do the original novel justice.

Having always been an avid book reader, and a great believer that books are usually better than the films made from them, I ordered a copy, and for reasons that I needn’t go into, I never got around to reading this novel until a few days ago.

So, was it better than the movies?

Absolutely!

For starters, the novel has a much more personal, human touch, to the point where you not only care about the dog, but about the two main characters as well.

I also really like the way the story starts with apparently disconnected threads, and how they all come together – relatively early on, and not near the end of the book, which I find frustrating.

Some people comment that the characters aren’t believable, and to that, I say rubbish!

The hero and heroine may not be the type of people you’d meet every day in the street, but that doesn’t mean they’re not credible. True, their situations and backgrounds may not be like yours or mine, but so what?

As for the dog, then he’s not cute in the Disney sense of the word, but he certainly is endearing, and as the story progresses, his character really emerges.

For me, the novel has a bit of everything – human interest, conflict, action, humour, light and shade, good guys, bad guys, murder, romance (and a bit of sex) and more. (This is something I tried to include in my first novel, Ring Of Daggers, although I’ll leave it up to others to judge how successful I was.)

So, in summary, I would definitely recommend Watchers to anybody who enjoys a good read. You may be able to watch one of the movies in less time, but I would certainly rather spend more time reading the book and conjuring up my own images of the story than relying on somebody else’s interpretation – too many good books are ruined by Hollywood, but that’s a rant for another day.

Conjure by Jacques Le Sueur

Posted by The Random Blogger on Apr 10, 2011 in Book Reviews, Free Stuff, Magic, Thoughts On Life

Conjure by Jacques Le SueurThrough a mutual friend, I am fortunate enough to have met somebody (I use the term “met” loosely, as we’re Facebook friends) called Jacques Le Sueur.

Jacques is a magician living in South Africa, and he has just written an amazing eBook called “Conjure“.

What is it about?

Well, it’s hard to describe, but it’s partly drawn from the bizarre variety of experiences he’s had, so here’s what Jacques has to say about it: it’s “a little bit about adventure, a little bit about marketing, a little bit about magic. Creating a message to share with the world, and getting people to pay you bags of cash for it.

There are two really good reasons to download and read this book.

Firstly, it is both entertaining and inspiring, and contains information that you will definitely find useful, no matter what you do in life.

Secondly, it’s free!

Having said that, Jacques does ask for donations, which is something I highly recommend doing, as a small token of thanks for creating this truly unusual eBook.

Download your copy of “Conjure” today – you won’t regret it!

FruITion by Chris Potts

Posted by The Random Blogger on Nov 2, 2008 in Book Reviews

Let me start by saying that I had the pleasure and privilege of working directly with Chris at the last company I worked for.

The work that Chris undertook with my colleagues and me was ground-breaking, and even though it turned our world upside down, for all of the right reasons, it was an enjoyable and illuminating journey.

This book, which is an inspired piece of writing, bears absolutely no resemblance to any other book on strategy, IT or otherwise, that I have read. Most of these books are long, dry and, I have to say, almost unintelligible. FruITion, on the other hand, is an easy read – maybe even too easy, as the narrative style reads more like a good novel than a serious business book. And, of course, this was the intention, and it succeeds beautifully.
