Watchers By Dean Koontz – A Review

Watchers by Dean KoontzSeveral years ago now, we watched a few movies that were apparently based on a Dean Koontz novel called “Watchers“.

The movies were so-so, but when I looked on IMDb (our standard source for all information relating to movies and TV shows), we found a lot of people saying that these various movies really didn’t do the original novel justice.

Having always been an avid book reader, and a great believer that books are usually better than the films made from them, I ordered a copy, and for reasons that I needn’t go into, I never got around to reading this novel until a few days ago.

So, was it better than the movies?

Absolutely!

For starters, the novel has a much more personal, human touch, to the point where you not only care about the dog, but about the two main characters as well.

I also really like the way the story starts with apparently disconnected threads, and how they all come together – relatively early on, and not near the end of the book, which I find frustrating.

Some people comment that the characters aren’t believable, and to that, I say rubbish!

The hero and heroine may not be the type of people you’d meet every day in the street, but that doesn’t mean they’re not credible. True, their situations and backgrounds may not be like yours or mine, but so what?

As for the dog, then he’s not cute in the Disney sense of the word, but he certainly is endearing, and as the story progresses, his character really emerges.

For me, the novel has a bit of everything – human interest, conflict, action, humour, light and shade, good guys, bad guys, murder, romance (and a bit of sex) and more. (This is something I tried to include in my first novel, Ring Of Daggers, although I’ll leave it up to others to judge how successful I was.)

So, in summary, I would definitely recommend Watchers to anybody who enjoys a good read. You may be able to watch one of the movies in less time, but I would certainly rather spend more time reading the book and conjuring up my own images of the story than relying on somebody else’s interpretation – too many good books are ruined by Hollywood, but that’s a rant for another day.

I haven’t seen the movie yet. I had to admit, sometimes novel inspired movies lacks a lot of important details. That is why I always read the book first before watching the movie.

If the book is much better than the movies then I have to read the novel first. Thanks for suggesting to read the book first. I hope to see more like this on your site.

Watchers is a very powerful novel. It is full of suspense. I agree with you. I like the book more than the movies.
